Subject - Concerned Others support network

Posted : (Thursday 24th May 2007 ) By - Jane (Registered User)Oldham Alcohol and Drugs Service (ADS) has appealed for the friends and families of people with drug problems not to suffer in silence.

Relatives and partners often bear the brunt of drug misuse, and seeing a loved one suffer can take a huge toll on their own health and wellbeing. But because of the stigma around drug abuse, the hurt can remain hidden and support not sought.

Now ADS has joined forces with Oldham Drugs and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) to encourage 'concerned others' to reach out and access a support network, which will show people how to deal with the strain and even develop basic skills to provide at-home counselling.

The 'Concerned Others' group provides confidential advice and support to family members who feel they can no longer cope with the heartache of seeing their loved ones' lives wrecked by drugs.

The DAAT team and ADS have also combined to run a drop-in advice group for people who fear their stimulant drug use is becoming more serious and want help.

The CRASH drop-in is aimed at people who take stimulants such as cocaine, ecstasy and speed. Stimulants can be very addictive and create strong psychological dependences due to changes in the brain. Weekend drug use can cast a shadow over the whole week as users recover from low moods and exhaustion, affecting work and home life.

Support for concerned others is available every Thursday between 6pm and 8pm at the ADS centre at 5 Greaves Street, Oldham and attendance is flexible within these two hours. The CRASH drop-in is open to all on Wednesday evenings between the same times. Queries about either evening to 0161 624 9595.
